The next afternoon found Sophia and me hurrying up to our turret the moment classes ended for the day. We slipped inside the empty room and waited several minutes for either Nicolette or Amy to show up, but the room remained thankfully empty except for the two of us. Within moments, I had summoned Giselle and filled her in on our plan. She didn’t seem to approve, but she at least conceded to help us and set to work teaching me the spell I needed to know.

It was an incredibly difficult spell to pick up, however, and I channeled more of my power into Giselle to make her fully corporeal for maximum instruction. Sophia sat on my bed watching us while I attempted to learn the magic.

The spell that we were using to record Isla’s behavior was interesting – it captured small movements and spoken words, playing them back when the spell caster said the proper sequence of words. I watched Sophia being recorded and broadcast on the wall of the room multiple times over as I worked on mastering the spell.

“Is there a way to show this recording to a mass number of people?” I asked Giselle, curious after my most successful attempt. A recording of Sophia sitting on the bed and tilting her head in response to Giselle’s command currently filled the entire right side of the room.

“Maybe.” Giselle stopped focusing on correcting my hand flourishes and lifted her head up. “But your best bet is to show it to as many people as possible in person. Over time, the recording gets weaker and weaker, and only the witch or warlock who cast the spell has the power to replay it.”

“So, what I’m hearing is we need to cause a scene and make sure that plenty of people are present before we replay it.” I crossed my arms, thinking. Causing a scene had never been a problem before, but now we needed the right people to show up. All of the professors in the school needed to be there, along with most of the Council members and Isla herself. It would be a challenge, but I was up to it.

“That’s exactly right. The first playback will be your best bet.” Giselle confirmed before correcting my form again. “That’s right, keep the seal held up the entire time you’re casting the spell. It’ll be stronger that way.”

The turning door handle made us all jump and I quickly dropped my hands, cutting off the recording. I moved my power away from Giselle, letting her fade back into ghost form and she floated away from me towards Sophia who was still sitting on my bed. Trying my hardest not to look guilty of anything, I grabbed a textbook from the floor and turned it to a random page, immediately skimming the words.

Amy strode in the door, her head down in a book as she walked into the dorm. She stopped abruptly and stared at me and Sophia with a weird look on her face.
